Re-imagined online store and streaming service for a traditional music composer
Client Overview
David Adam Smith (DAS Works) is a composer dedicated to reviving traditional sacred music. He wanted a website that would serve as a refuge from modern noise—a place where visitors could explore, purchase, and appreciate authentic sacred compositions.
The Challenge
David needed a website that:
- Balanced aesthetic elegance with functional eCommerce capabilities.
- Reflected the timeless beauty of sacred music while feeling traditional and intuitive.
- Allowed secure sales of compositions and recordings while protecting copyrights.
- Provided a clear structure for visitors to explore his works, philosophy, and inspirations.
- Integrated personal photography from Paris and Rome to create a unique, immersive experience.
Design solution
Design Thinking and Strategy
With David’s vision in mind, I focused on creating a website that:
- Invokes serenity & reverence – Using a minimalist layout, soft typography, and high impact photography editing.
- Emphasizes music as an experience – Avoiding a commercialized feel, instead designing a space where users can listen, read, and reflect.
- Balances elegance with usability – A carefully crafted typography hierarchy (Lexend for clarity, Adobe Jensen Pro for elegance) ensures readability.
UX solution
User Experience (UX) & Navigation
A clear hierarchical structure was designed:
- Homepage: Introduces David’s philosophy with an immediate call to explore music.
- Music Store: Organized by composition type (choral, instrumental), with a seamless preview & purchase experience.
- About & Philosophy: A story-driven page detailing David’s mission and artistic influences.
- Blog (Canticum Verborum): A “Song of Words” for deeper discussions on sacred music’s role in culture and worship.
Tech solution
Development & Technology
The website was built on WordPress using a customized Full Site Editing (FSE) theme:
- WooCommerce – For selling sheet music & recordings in multiple formats (MP3, WAV, FLAC).
- Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) – For managing custom content fields and extending WordPress features.
- Gutenberg Blocks – For performance-optimized, modular design.
- Woo Memberships – For providing annual streaming services to music professionals and enthusiasts.
